On the 77th anniversary of the devastating atomic bombs in Japan, the Congolese Civil Society Association and Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education invite you to an event exploring the untold story of the making of the atomic bomb - the story of Shinkolobwe, the open uranium mine that provided the material for the horror met upon Japan. The region of Shinkolobwe in the DRC has a double position in world history: on one hand, it is the origin of the uranium that made the first atomic bomb; on the other hand, it represents the first victims of radiation by the same uranium. Victims that still suffer today. This event, drawing together international presenters from the DRC, UK, New Mexico and South Africa, will engage participants in questions around extractive economies, war, and the unequal responses we have to humanitarian and environmental crisis.
We remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki - but do we know of Shinkolobwe?
