The Diamond Tetra, Makunaima pittieri (older name Moenkhausia pittieri) is a characin from Venezuela. It is endemic to country’s largest lake, Lake Valencia where it inhabits shallow, vegetated parts of the lake, as well as several slow flowing creeks and tributaries.
Lake Valencia is heavily polluted today, and all the Diamond Tetras in the aquarium trade are bred in captivity.
The fish is an old standby in the aquarium hobby, but is nowhere as popular as… say neon tetra or cardinals.
When you see young Diamonds in a bare tank at your local fish shop, you probably won’t notice them – they are pale and colorles. You will probably head straight on to the next tank, with some more interesting fish.
And sure, the Diamond Tetra is a late bloomer, and it prefers planted tanks with lots of hiding places, and dim light to really shine. If you furthermore give them soft, slightly acid water with driftwood, leaves on the substrate and other botanicals to stain the water to a warm tone and lower the pH slightly – full grown Diamonds will reward you with glowing diamonds on the body and intense colors in the long swaying fins.
Hope you enjoyed this moment of chill with the Diamonds in the Jungle.
