India Throws Away Its Own Mineral Independence Every Year

• India is heavily dependent on imports for several critical minerals needed for advanced manufacturing and the energy transition.
• At the same time, India generated approximately 6.19 million tonnes of e-waste in 2024. NITI Aayog cites projections of approximately 14 million tonnes by 2030.
• That waste contains recoverable materials, including valuable metals that can potentially re-enter domestic supply chains.
• The problem is not that India has no recycling industry. NITI Aayog estimates that India had around 4.2 million tonnes of annual e-waste recycling capacity in 2024. But the informal sector still accounted for approximately 62% of processing, showing how incomplete the formal recovery system remains.
• The strategic opportunity is therefore not simply “more recycling.” It is building a system that collects, sorts and recovers high-value critical materials efficiently enough to substitute part of India's imported mineral demand.
• What it signals: Sometimes the resource shortage is partly a recovery problem. The mineral isn't necessarily absent — it may simply be trapped inside a waste stream that the supply chain has not learned to mine.
