Stephen Yarbrough is an American composer and educator known for tonal, melodic, and rhythmically charged orchestral works. A former professor at the University of South Dakota for 29 years, he holds a DMA from the University of Oklahoma and has had compositions performed by the National and Minnesota Orchestras. Yarbrough composes music that is often, according to River City Records, consonant and lyric, utilizing 'free' tonality, rich harmony, and shifting meters. The winner of numerous national composition awards and grants, Dr. Yarbrough writes for a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations, ranging from solo vocal and choral pieces to chamber music and works for orchestra and symphonic band. He composed 'Angel's Dances,' which was used as theme music for Welch's commercials, as mentioned in Argus Leader. His work 'Alleluias for Orchestra' served as the official anthem of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. He taught at the University of South Dakota and has been published by Ars Nova Press.
