Описание: A common task that we get asked to do is to locate the pipes that are in easements, in the backyards of people's properties.
Typically, it's a sewer or stormwater pipe that services the whole area.
Generally, it is so that the homeowner can build an extension, and the council has asked them to confirm where the pipe is so they can get a permit.
Sometimes it's a developer that wants to build a block of units, and the water authority wants them to check where the sewer is so they don't encroach on it.
In this particular case, it is someone wanting to build a granny flat at the back of the property, and they need us to locate the stormwater pipe for them, although, as you will see in the video, we end up doing the sewer as well.
From time to time, we also get requests to find these pipes for fencing contractors and landscapers who are building retaining walls. However, developers are the most common clients.

The first step is to always do a FREE Before You Dig Request.

Then once you get the plans back, make sure you have both drainage as in stormwater and sewerage plans. The reason is that in some areas of Australia, the local council and or water authorities are not part of the Before You Dig system, so whilst you might make a request and get plans back and it shows nothing at the back where you are working. There could still in fact be pipes back there. So always check you have every service plan.

Then check if it shows anything in the area. Keep in mind the plans are an indication only. If it shows a pipe on there and if it shows offsets and if you are hands on and don't mind a bit of physical labour, then dig down and confirm the pipe is where the plan says it is.

If however, the plan shows a pipe there but doesn't have any offsets, as was the case out here, then you will need the service of a professional pipes and cable locator.
