The capture of a live coelacanth off the South African coast in 1938, one of the greatest biological discoveries of the 20th century, was just the first step in an amazing scientific adventure that continues to this day. Mike Bruton will share with you the agony and ecstasy of finding and researching ‘old fourlegs’ based on his personal involvement and his acquaintance with the main characters involved in the drama. He will also discuss the latest discoveries on the biology and conservation of the coelacanth and the lessons that we have learned for our own survival. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Mike Bruton was born and schooled in East London, where the first coelacanth was caught, and maintained his interest in the iconic fish throughout his career as a research scientist at Rhodes University and a science educator at the Two Oceans Aquarium and Cape Town Science Centre. He has observed live coelacanths in the Comoros and documented their natural and cultural history during extensive travels abroad. He was recently awarded the prestigious Marloth Medal by the Royal Society of South Africa for his contributions to science and science education.
