In the pre-COVID winter of 2020, I took a trip to the Alapayevsk narrow-gauge railway—a fascinating lifeline deep in the Siberian forests at the eastern foot of the Ural Mountains. This historic 750mm gauge railway, one of the longest of its kind still in operation, serves remote villages with no other year-round access to the outside world. Join me on a journey aboard a Soviet TU-6A diesel locomotive, past frozen landscapes and tiny unlisted stops, where an iron stove keeps passengers warm and schoolkids race the train.
