They Laughed at the Black Cowboy — Until the West Knew Nat Love’s Name

In the dusty cattle towns and rugged ranches of the 19th-century American West, they said a Black man couldn't be a cowboy — that someone born into slavery had no business riding alongside white men, competing for glory, or claiming a place in frontier legend. Yet Nat Love did exactly that. Against every expectation and in the face of racism, danger, and open mockery, he rose from bondage to become one of the most skilled cowboys the frontier ever produced.
On July 4th, 1876, in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, Love entered a roping and shooting contest that would make history. He roped, saddled, and mounted a wild mustang in just 9 minutes — nearly 4 minutes faster than any competitor. He then placed all 14 rifle shots dead center from 250 yards. The crowd erupted, and they gave him a name that would echo through history: Deadwood Dick.
For two decades, Love drove cattle from Texas to Montana, survived stampedes and gunfights, and mastered every trail in the West. He learned multiple languages, earned respect from fellow cowboys regardless of race, and claimed to have crossed paths with legends like Billy the Kid and Buffalo Bill. When the cowboy era ended, he adapted — becoming a Pullman porter and eventually publishing his autobiography in 1907, one of the only first-person accounts by a Black cowboy of that era.
Though Hollywood's Westerns largely erased Black cowboys from history, the truth remains: one in four cowboys were African American. Nat Love's story proves they weren't just there — they were champions.
This is the forgotten story of excellence and determination — of a man who began his life as property and ended it as a legend who refused to be erased from history.
