The Mall of America (MOA) is one of the world's most iconic shopping and entertainment destinations, located in Bloomington, Minnesota, just southeast of Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport. It's not just a mall—it's a massive complex blending retail, dining, and thrills, drawing about 32 million visitors annually from around the globe. Since its opening, it has generated over $3 billion in economic impact for Minnesota each year.
History
Construction began in 1989 on the site of the former Metropolitan Stadium (home to the Minnesota Twins and Vikings baseball/football teams until 1982). The mall officially opened on August 11, 1992, with 330 stores and over 10,000 employees, revolutionizing the retail experience by integrating massive entertainment elements. Owned by the Triple Five Group (run by the Ghermezian family) and co-managed with Melvin Simon & Associates, it was developed in partnership with the Bloomington Port Authority. Fun fact: Early plans included an indoor submarine ride and convention center, but budget cuts scrapped them.
Size and Stats
Spanning a whopping 5.6 million square feet (that's larger than 78 American football fields!), MOA is the largest shopping mall in the United States, the Western Hemisphere, and the fifth-largest in the world. It houses over 520 stores (from high-end brands like Apple and Louis Vuitton to everyday spots like H&M), plus dozens of restaurants ranging from quick bites to fine dining. The complex employs around 13,000 people and hosts 300+ events yearly, including concerts and fashion shows.
Key Attractions
What sets MOA apart is its entertainment focus—shopping is just the start! Highlights include:
Nickelodeon Universe: An indoor theme park with seven roller coasters (like the SpongeBob SquarePants Rock Bottom Plunge and Avatar Airbender), plus rides, mini golf, and shows. It evolved from the original Camp Snoopy in 2008.
SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium: Home to over 4,500 sea creatures in a 300-foot underwater tunnel, featuring sharks, turtles, stingrays, and interactive exhibits.
Other fun spots: FlyOver flight simulator ride, mini golf, arcades, escape rooms, a psychedelic fun house called Wink World, and even a Lego Store and movie theater.
No sales tax on clothing in Minnesota makes it a shopper's paradise too!
