So, I decided to port my VB3 MIDI project to 32-bit Windows 95 via VB5. So for context, the MIDI player is based on the MIDI MCI Control project that Microsoft included in VB3. From their, I made a amateurish MIDI player with a slightly more enhanced UI. The project originally started because I wanted a MIDI player that worked on Windows For Multimedia Extensions, which is basically Windows 3.0 with multimedia support. VB3 can output binaries that are compatible with both Windows 3.0 and 3.1.
Now that I', trying out Windows 95, I wanted to updated the MIDI project to the newer Windows 95 aesthetic. Now, I could have simply recompiled the project as is, and it would have been fine. However, the program would have looked out of place given the UI changes with Win95, especially in regard to the button and font changes. After two hours of playing around with the underlining code and making the UI edits, the MIDI player now looked much more like how a Windows 95 applications should look.
As a company that started off making programming languages, it would only be natural for MS to throw all their development weight behind the new OS. Microsoft knows the needs of the developers like the back of there hand. The support for Windows 95 was extended into updated versions of both Visual C++ and VB, which would eventually be bundled together as Visual Studio. VB4 supported both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, with VB5 being exclusive to Win32. The new programming environment would show developers how to take advantage of the new OS and it's UI. Microsoft would release their development documentation in the form of MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network) to help programmers understand the new API.
DOSBox is emulating a Multimedia PC with a Intel Pentium Processor set to max cycles. There is 32MB's of RAM installed, along with a S3 Trio 32/64 SVGA Video Adapter and a Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 Audio Adapter. Windows is running at the screen resolution of 800 by 600, 16-bit (65,5536 Colors) depth. The IBM Aptiva OEM version of Windows 95 is installed.
