Amen, I say to you,
one of you will betray me. Matt 26:21
Consummatum Est
The one who dips in the dish with Jesus,
that one who condemns Jesus to die
says, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?”
Then there is Peter, who stands in for us
who says, “Surely, I will never deny
you, even if I have to die with you
but that very night, at the third cock crow
he swears, “I don’t know the man, no, not I.”
Then there is the divine duplicity,
from the cross comes Jesus’ clotted cry
forsaken, mystified, he wonders why,
“My God, My God, why have you abandoned me?”
After spitting out his lamentation,
Jesus reaches deep into the black,
rises past rejection and pulls God back,
prays for his enemies, “Father forgive them,”
“Consummatum est,” the deed is done,
their love accomplished, Father and Son.
