I bought this plant as a Colocasia Gigantea, but recently learned from a viewer that it is now reclassified as a Leucocasia Gigantea. Anyways, it is growing a baby offshoot and I am going to try and propagate it by cutting through the corm or bulb and hope it has roots.
It's confusing when a plant's scientific name is changed, especially with this plant since it has been called a Colocasia Gigantea for over 100 years. The online sellers still call it a Colocasia Gigantea and that name is now considered a synonym for Leucocasia Gigantea.
To propagate the Gigantea, I used my pruning saw to cut through the corm and dug it up with my shovel. It had plenty of roots and should survive the winter inside my greenhouse. I planted it in a pot with potting soil and will leave it in the greenhouse for six months before planting it my garden around April or May.
The mother plant started to deteriorate and was dying back to the ground. I decided to dig up the mother plant and put it in a pot and keep this plant in my greenhouse for the winter too. After a couple of weeks in the greenhouse the new leaf unfurled and it is looking like it is spring again with the new leaf. I hope to grow my tropical plants in my greenhouse this winter to get a head start for the next growing season so that my plants will grow even larger than ever before!
