The Sonata for Domra and Organ is one of the few examples of original organ ensemble music. In this work the Russian folk instrument domra performs in duet with the organ, which makes the sonata truly unique, while the composer's use of Balkan and Turkish folk motifs and styles in combination with the techniques of Western European academic music gives it a particularly colorful character.
In the first movement of the sonata, a solo monologue of the domra in the spirit of Turkish saz semai, created in the maqam uşşak, flows into the main theme written in the rhythm of the Bulgarian dance "sedi donka". Elegantly developing the main theme through a lyrical linking part, the composer contrasts it with a playful side theme. Full of contrasts, this part of the work is an example of a sonata form filled with "non-classical" content.
The second movement is written in 9/8 time signature and includes two themes: the first, lyrical, starts in the aksak rhythm (2+2+2+3); then the second, dance-like theme comes, dividing the measure into three equal parts (3+3+3), at the end both of them merging into an incredible dance and becoming inseparable.
The third part includes stylistic variations on the main theme. The theme is represented in an irregular time (3+2+3) - now it is a demonic presto whirling through the notes of the uşşak maqam. The first variation is restrained and polyphonic. The second, lyrical, is close to the style of Romanticism. In the third variation, the theme is presented in a jazz-blues manner. The fourth variation is a modified reprise, returning the listener to the initial presto tempo and brilliantly concluding the entire cycle.
