Sete is a ritzy beach town located about 55 miles north and east of Narbonne, at the far end of the Canal du Midi, and connecting via a separate canal to the ocean. Known to the Ancient Greeks and used as a minor coastal harbor by the Imperial Romans, the city has had more than its fair share of ups and downs since it was established as a full fledged town and terminus of Louis XIVs massive and monumental Canal du Midi in the 17th century.
Unless you are a beach lover or a riverboating enthusiast you might not think there's much to see here, but if you're willing to expand your views, there is quite a bit, including the city's tiny but still important role in the establishment of modern day Israel.
