(9 Jan 2016) German police arrested protesters in Cologne on Saturday and used water cannon to clear the streets.
Many turned up to support a protest organised by German anti-Islam group Pegida (Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West), while leftist groups staged a rival rally.
The mood is tense following a string of sexual assaults and robberies on New Year's Eve, blamed largely on foreigners.
The Cologne police chief was dismissed on Friday amid mounting criticism of his force's handling of the incidents.
The reports of the attacks on women by groups of men described by police as predominantly Arab or North African in origin have fuelled calls for tighter controls on immigrants in Germany, which received nearly 1.1 million migrants in 2015.
