For much of the Renaissance and early Baroque eras, instrumental music rarely specified which instruments were intended. This made the printed material more marketable, and gave the performers leeway in performance choices.
Beginning around 1600, however, composers and printers began giving suggestions for instrumentation. Heinrich Utrecht in 1624 printed a collection of stylized dances “Parnassi Musici Terpsichore” in Celle, where he was employed by the Duke Christian of Brunswick-Lüneberg.
The pavane we play in this video specifies “trombones or bassoons” and we have decided on both.
