On a night out in 1995, Newcastle civil engineer, Joe Cinque, met a soon to be law student from Canberra, Anu Singh. They started a long-distance relationship, and by the following year, Joe had moved to Canberra to live with Anu. Anu had been struggling with her mental health for years at this point, and despite her family and Joe trying to intervene, she refused to get help. By late 1997, Anu's mental health had spiralled, to an extent that most around her did not realise, and because Anu had a reputation for being a 'drama queen', many ignored her when she started telling them some pretty disturbing thoughts and ideas...
