This canyon starts so high on the slope of the (recently!) active Poás Volcano that the amount of sulfuric acid output corrodes rappel bolts, irritates the airways, prohibits jungle growth, and acidifies the creek.
Move quickly down through that part, and while the water stays acidic, the air clears, and the canyon gradually transforms from lunarscape to rainforest.
