Kaiser Wilhelm II and Adolf Hitler had a strained and hostile relationship—though they never met, Wilhelm strongly disliked Hitler’s leadership and vision for Germany. He saw Hitler as reckless, dangerous, and harmful to Germany’s culture and history. He was especially critical of Hitler’s treatment of Jewish people, even saying he was ashamed to be German. Despite recognizing some military successes, Wilhelm believed Hitler had turned Germany into a nation of fear and fanaticism. Even in death, Wilhelm refused to support Hitler, choosing to be buried in the Netherlands rather than in Nazi Germany.
