Youtube Has A HUGE Problem with Their Algorithm..

If you’ve ever made a great YouTube video — solid idea, cinematic footage, clean audio, strong title, compelling thumbnail — and still watched it stall out… this video is for you.
I run multiple YouTube channels for myself and for clients, and I’ve spent years inside YouTube Studio analyzing analytics, retention graphs, engagement rates, likes, dislikes, and audience behavior. And there are two major problems with the YouTube algorithm that you cannot fix — no matter how good your video is.
This video is not about tags, thumbnails, titles, or optimization tricks. Assume you did everything right. This is about what happens after you hit publish — when your video lives or dies based on viewer behavior and how the algorithm interprets it.
First, YouTube is not just a video platform — it’s a social media app. Comments matter. Threads matter even more. When people reply to each other, argue, debate, or pile onto a discussion, the algorithm reads that as value and promotes the video. It doesn’t care if the engagement is positive or negative — it only sees activity.
That creates a problem: videos that spark controversy or negativity can outperform thoughtful, well-produced content simply because people are talking. I’ve seen videos succeed because of arguments in the comments, while quieter, more cinematic videos struggle.
The second issue is one most creators don’t talk about: TV viewers can’t comment.
Over half of my audience watches on a television. That means they’re engaged, loyal, watching full episodes — but they’re invisible to the engagement metrics YouTube prioritizes. They can’t easily like, comment, or reply. And when they do open the video on their phone just to comment, it can actually hurt retention data.
So the algorithm sees fewer comments, fewer likes, and sometimes shorter sessions — even though the content is working exactly as intended.
Then there’s the problem of likes vs dislikes. I recently posted a sarcastic spoof video that sparked tons of comments and engagement — far above average. But because some viewers didn’t get the joke and hit dislike, the overall like percentage dropped. The algorithm punished the video, despite strong engagement and discussion.
Finally, there’s video length.
YouTube wants longer videos because longer videos mean more ads. If you’re concise, direct, and efficient — especially if you come from a filmmaking or screenwriting background — you’re actively fighting the platform. Stretch the video and viewers drop off. Keep it tight and the algorithm deprioritizes it.
That’s the purgatory creators live in.
This video breaks down why these problems exist, how they affect creators making cinematic or TV-style content, and why sometimes your best work doesn’t get rewarded — even when the audience loves it.
If you’ve ever wondered why YouTube feels inconsistent, frustrating, or stacked against certain types of creators… this is the conversation we need to be having.
