The ballet “Parade” was premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in 1917 by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, portraying the music of Erik Satie scored to a one-act scenario by Jean Cocteau with costumes and sets designed by Pablo Picasso.
“PARADE & the Velvet Gentleman” transposes the ballet on a contemporary platform, displaying a variety of art forms: contemporary dance, stop-motion animation, projection dancing, masks and puppetry. The costumes are inspired by the original sketches of Picasso while the music features the four-hands piano arrangement of Satie.
“PARADE & the Velvet Gentleman” revisits this 20th century masterpiece to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
“PARADE & the Velvet Gentleman” is a collaboration between the ŻiguŻajg International Arts Festival for Children & Young People and Modern Music Days concert series organised by Teatru Manoel, the Malta Association for Contemporary Music and Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture.
