Welcome to the 12 cylinder demo day at the Simeone Automotive Museum in Philadelphia! This demo day honors the smooth, powerful, exotic and dramatic 12 cylinder engines. The four museum cars featured were the Ferrari 375 MM, the Auburn V12 Speedster, the Alfa Romeo 33 TT 12 and the Bizzarini P538.
The Ferrari 375 was Ferrari’s top sports racing car of the early to mid 1950’s. A Ferrari 375 Plus was the overall winner of the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 375 MM was powered by a 4.5 liter V12 making an impressive 340 horsepower. Weight was under 2000 pounds or 900 kilograms, resulting in a very high power to weight ratio. This particular 375, 0412AM won its class at the Giornato dei Primati race at Castelfusano in 1954, according to the museum website. Years after its prime, it was driven at Bonneville and vintage Mille Miglias. The 375MM is a regular participant in the Simeone museum’s demo days.
The Auburn V12 12-165 speedster was one of the most beautiful and iconic American cars of the 1930’s. It’s 165 horsepower 6.4 liter V12 helped make it one of the fastest road cars in its day. This particular variant of the Auburn was the most luxurious of all. Amazingly, Auburn had priced this car so low that the company lost money. Its art deco styling, paint job and patterned Vogue white wall tires make it my favorite pre-WWII road car in the museum. Apparently Dr. Simeone has never seen another set of these tires. Because of that, it is very understandable why it is not driven as hard as the other museum cars.
The Alfa Romeo 33 series was one of the most dominant sports car of the 1970’s. The 33 TT 12 was powered bv a high revving 3 liter flat 12 producing 500 horsepower. The car won the 1975 World Sportscar Championship. This particular car is one of just a very few at the museum that do not currently run and drive. Curator Kevin Kelly said that it will be a massive undertaking that they want to do properly. The car held the distinction of being the newest car in the permanent museum collection until a Nissan was donated to the museum in 2015. As race cars became more computerized, it became more difficult to run them in a way that the museum is able to run them.
The fourth car of the demo day is the Bizzarini P538, on loan to the museum by Van Horneff. Bizzarini P538’s were either powered by a Chevrolet 327 V8, or a Lamborghini V12, like this one. The Lamborghini V12 used was a 3.5 liter with 336 horsepower. This P538, 1 of 2 with a Lamborghini V12, was entered into the Can Am series race at Bridgehampton in 1966, but was unable to start. Huge thanks to Van Horneff for displaying his car at the Simeone Museum, for driving it, and for driving it as it should be driven. It hasn’t been a regular participant in the demo days so it was fantastic to see it out running.
Now, enjoy the sights and sounds of these wonderful V12 cars as they are driven by Dr. Simeone, curator Kevin Kelly and the Bizzarini’s owner Van Horneff.
