This presentation will discuss why a child should first undergo an orofacial myofunctional assessment before they are given a cognitive or behavioral diagnosis. We will review sleep disordered breathing, the possible impacts of an orofacial myofunctional disorder on growth and development, and what can be done when a disorder has been identified.

Karindy Ong graduated from the University of Houston with a Master of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders in May 2015. She has clinical experience in a variety of settings including the public and charter schools, hospital settings including acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient rehabilitation, in addition to working with community outreach therapy programs. Karindy has been the lead Speech-Language Pathologist of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at Texas Children’s Hospital in the Houston Medical Center, a member of the brain injury rehabilitation team at TIRR Memorial Hermann, and a PRN Speech-Language Pathologist working in several different therapy settings and hospitals within the Memorial Hermann Hospital System.
Karindy has experience treating both children and adults in the areas of voice and resonance, dysarthria, dysphagia, aphasia, apraxia, articulation, receptive/expressive language, fluency, neurocognitive disorders (attention, memory, executive functioning, problem solving), and augmentative-alternative communication systems. She has specialized experience working with disorders of consciousness, spinal cord injury, and brain injury. Karindy’s certifications include Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), Beckman Oral Motor Protocol, VitalStim, and Safe-and-Sound Protocol. She has presented at the TIRR Memorial Hermann Brain Injury Conference on Locked-In Syndrome and enjoys training others as a part of her role as a Speech-Language Pathologist. Her therapy approach is functional, dynamic, and targeted to produce the highest outcomes for each individual.

Dr. Ron Swatzyna, Ph.D. the brain expert!
Dr. Swatzyna is a certified brain injury specialist, board certified in neurotherapy, and biofeedback.
He received his Masters of Science and Doctorate of Philosophy in Social Work from The University of Texas Arlington. Currently, he is the Director/Chief Scientist of Neurophysiology Research at Houston Neuroscience Brain Center and Founder of Clinical NeuroAnalytics, LLC. Dr. Swatzyna is a licensed clinical social worker, and board certified in neurofeedback and biofeedback by the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA). For the past 24 years, Dr. Swatzyna has analyzed and treated the most diagnostically challenging cases in both inpatient and outpatient settings and 16 years ago he started acquiring electroencephalography (EEG) and quantitative EEG (qEEG) data to assist psychiatrists in medication selection and titration. Dr. Swatzyna also holds the distinction of being the first to integrate Pharmaco-EEG into private practice in the United States. As a researcher, he has presented and/or published 88 peer-reviewed papers on brain injury, dysfunction, psychotropic medication and other related topics at national and international conferences. Dr. Swatzyna is the Chair of the Sigma Xi Institutional Review Board (IRB) and is a board member of the Rice University/Texas Medical Center Chapter. Dr. Swatzyna is a retired City of Arlington, Texas professional Firefighter-EMT-I and a veteran of Vietnam and the first Gulf War. Finally, his personal battle with a traumatic brain injury and posttraumatic stress disorder has motivated him to become a leading expert in brain dysfunction.
