The fundamentals of how temperature affects the ductility or toughness of plain and low alloy steels materials and welds as are described. The steel making practice and heat treating improves the ductility of steel materials at low Temperatures.
The episode concludes with a summary of the various Static equipment Codes where there are MDMT requirements.
A summary of the advantages and disadvantages of Charpy impact test is described. The Charpy test is the standard method for verifying the low temperature toughness of materials and welds. Due to the high cost of Charpy impact testing, fabricators will avoid testing by means of using the different exemptions from the Codes.
