“With mouth tape, everything went away.”
James Nestor’s self-experiment at Stanford University in 2018 is fascinating. Nestor, along with breathing therapist Anders Olsson, plugged their noses with silicone for 10 days to force mouth breathing, then switched to nasal breathing for another 10 days. The goal was to compare the effects of mouth versus nasal breathing on physiological markers like blood pressure, heart rate variability, sleep quality, and stress levels.
During the mouth-breathing phase, Nestor reported dire results: his snoring increased dramatically (by over 4,000% in some measures), he developed sleep apnea, his blood pressure spiked into stage-one hypertension, and he felt exhausted and stressed. Switching to nasal breathing reversed these effects—his blood pressure dropped, heart rate variability improved by over 150%, and he felt calmer and more energized. The experiment wasn’t a large-scale clinical trial (just two participants), but Nestor uses it to bolster decades of research on nasal breathing’s benefits, like increased oxygen uptake (via nitric oxide production) and better nervous system regulation.
