In this interview at the Washington National Opera rehearsal for Treemonisha, soprano Viviana Aurelia Goodwin discusses stepping into the title role in the company’s new production of Scott Joplin’s rarely performed opera.
Goodwin explains why this version of Treemonisha feels especially relevant today, highlighting the story’s themes of community, forgiveness, and leadership. With new orchestrations by Damien Sneed and a new libretto by Kyle Bass, the production brings fresh life to a historic work that has only been produced only a handful of times since its debut in 1911.
She also reflects on what it means personally and professionally to perform the role as part of Washington National Opera’s K. Fritz Young Artist Program and to collaborate with artists including Denise Graves, Justin Michael Austin, and Tashina Vaughan.
