Description
You are about to witness something truly special — a fully restored Star 28, one of the rarest Polish trucks ever used in the USSR. This vehicle, once almost lost to decades of modifications and shortages of original parts, has been brought back to life thanks to a meticulous restoration performed by experts who treated the machine with respect, precision and historical responsibility.
When this truck arrived, its condition reflected its turbulent past. During the Soviet years and the 1990s, nearly 60% of its parts had been replaced with Soviet components. The engine, bridge, gearbox, lights, wiring — almost everything had been modified. Finding authentic spare parts seemed nearly impossible until a Star identical to this one was sourced from Poland. It was disassembled, packed into a container and shipped, giving this vehicle a second chance at authenticity.
The Star 28 represents a turning point in Polish automotive history. Produced starting in 1968, it bridged the transition from the earlier Star 25 to the newer 200-series. It carried the spirit of the so-called “Golden Era” of Polish automotive engineering, when designers reworked their own ideas while integrating licensed European solutions. One of the most notable collaborations was with French body specialists, who helped shape the iconic cab design.
This truck is built on a robust frame structure with a spring-mounted front axle, shock absorbers, and a familiar layout for Eastern-European commercial vehicles of that era. Under the cab sits a diesel inline-six — the Star 359M engine, based on a licensed design from Leyland. Producing 150 horsepower and 432 Nm of torque, it offered reliability and traction for heavy-duty work. Although the cabin does not tilt forward like on Soviet KAMAZ trucks, the clever rail-style system allows the engine to be slid forward after unbolting the mounts.
Inside, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and bright. Wide panoramic windows, ventilation ducts, a heater, a practical dashboard, and thoughtful noise insulation show that the comfort of the driver was not an afterthought. A unique electrical system combines a 24-volt starting circuit with a 12-volt onboard network, an unusual but effective solution for its time. Even the door sound when closing reflects careful engineering.
This particular Star 28 has an additional historical layer — according to museum records, it arrived in Moscow for an exhibition in the 1980s but never returned home. It spent its life serving the city’s municipal fleet. Today it stands not only as a restored machine, but as a preserved memory of an era when international cooperation shaped industrial progress across socialist countries.
The truck is equipped with a Bumar P183 aerial lift — the same type used on Soviet ZIL vehicles — capable of lifting workers to the height of a five-story building. The insulated cradle ensured safety for electricians working under voltage up to 10 kV. Even though climbing to full height is intimidating, it demonstrates the engineering potential of the machine and the skill of the people who relied on it daily.
With ongoing preservation efforts by the Moscow Transport Museum, vehicles like the Star 28 are once again becoming visible to the public. This restored piece of history stands as a reminder that industrial heritage can be saved, appreciated, and returned to life when passion meets craftsmanship.
