A sudden whiteout snow squall / lake-effect burst on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026 triggered a massive chain-reaction crash on I-196 near 64th Avenue in Zeeland Township. Officials said 100+ vehicles were involved, including ~30–40 semi trucks, with jackknifed rigs and vehicles scattered across lanes and shoulders as visibility and traction vanished fast. ❄️🌬️

🚑 Injuries were reported, with ~9–12 people taken to hospitals, and authorities said there were no fatalities.
🚌 With traffic completely stuck, school and transit buses shuttled stranded drivers to Hudsonville High School for warmth, shelter, and pickup.
🛑 I-196 shut down both directions for hours, reopening around ~6 PM after being closed 7+ hours for cleanup and towing.
