“Angels We Have Heard on High” is an English-language version of the 18th-century French carol Les Anges dans nos campagnes, with one of the oldest sung phrases in Western sacred music: “Gloria in excelsis Deo.” The refrain preserves the original Latin proclamation from Luke 2:14.
