Rhodium uses span from catalytic converters to high-end rhodium jewelry, making it the world's most valuable metal. In this video, we explore rhodium uses in modern technology, why rhodium prices reached $29,000 per ounce, and how rhodium uses in automotive emissions control created a global supply crisis.
What is rhodium? Rhodium is the rarest and most expensive precious metal on Earth, with the chemical symbol Rh and atomic number 45. It belongs to the platinum group metals and is prized for its extreme corrosion resistance, reflectivity, and catalytic properties.
Rhodium was discovered in 1803 by English chemist William Hyde Wollaston while analyzing platinum ore. He named it "rhodium" from the Greek word "rhodon" (rose) because of the rose-colored compounds it forms. Today, rhodium is 10 times rarer than platinum and commands prices that dwarf gold.
The primary rhodium uses are in automotive catalytic converters, where it helps convert harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless gases. Over 80% of global rhodium supply goes into catalytic converters, creating intense demand as emission standards tighten worldwide. South Africa produces more than 80% of the world's rhodium, creating a supply monopoly that drives extreme price volatility.
Beyond catalytic converters, rhodium jewelry has become increasingly popular for its brilliant white finish and scratch resistance. Rhodium plating is commonly applied to white gold and sterling silver jewelry to enhance durability and shine. Rhodium plated sterling silver pieces offer luxury appearance at accessible prices.
Rhodium prices are notoriously volatile. In 2021, rhodium reached $29,000 per ounce—15 times the price of gold. By 2023, prices dropped to around $4,000 per ounce due to reduced automotive production and the rise of electric vehicles. This volatility has sparked a catalytic converter recycling industry and unfortunately, a catalytic converter theft epidemic.
In this video, we break down rhodium's discovery, unique chemical properties, why it's so expensive, its critical role in catalytic converters, rhodium jewelry applications, market volatility, the catalytic converter theft crisis, and what the future holds as electric vehicles replace combustion engines.
