This is the simplest way I know how to paint a firearm to be ready for the desert, or any environment if you switch up the colors. I'm taking advantage of millions of years of evolution that created snake camo. Ever almost step on one? If it weren't for rattles, and hisses, they (or we) would be toast.
What you'll need:
At least 2 colors for top and base. Krylon camo paint works really well since it is ultra flat.
Adhesion promoter. Its a clear primer that will help your paint stick to all surfaces.
Mesh fabric
Masking tape and some model clay or erasers (to cover sight posts, or sight beads)
Alcohol to get off any grease
Utility clamp and saw horses are optional, but recommended.
Patience, as it takes time to do it right.
Skill Level: 3 out of 10. The hardest part is prepping the firearm for paint, and being patient enough not to mess it up.
