The Scriptures highlight the universality of God's mercy and the challenge of faith:
-The First Reading (2 Kings 5:1-15ab): Naaman, a highly esteemed army commander afflicted with leprosy, travels to Israel seeking a cure. Though initially indignant at the prophet Elisha's simple command to wash seven times in the Jordan, Naaman obeys and his flesh becomes again like the flesh of a little child. He returns to the man of God, declaring, "Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel".
-The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 42): A thirsty soul’s cry: "Athirst is my soul for the living God".
-The Holy Gospel (Luke 4:24-30): Jesus speaks in the synagogue at Nazareth, declaring that "no prophet is accepted in his own native place". He points to the widows of Zarephath and Naaman the Syrian as examples of outsiders who received God’s favor. Filled with fury, the people attempt to hurl Him off a hill, but He passes through their midst and goes on His way.

May this communion bring us purification and the unity that is God’s unique gift to His people.
