During the Cold War in 1978 , the communist group led a bloody coup against the nations first president Hafizullah Amin in the saur revolution
Once in power the Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan ( PDPA ) run the country with an iron fist
There were curfews , travel bands, mass incarcerations and repression of decent
Nearly all levels of societies from academics to politicians to doctors and farmers joined the resistance against the successive communist government
By 1979 the Soviet steeped in to support the communist government
This cost the attention of the west
The United States , with the help of Pakistan and several Arab states began a covert operation to train and arm the resistance forces , the mujahideen
Many of these mujahideen were ordinary Afghanistan men defending their nation from foreign invasion
Foreign fighters also came to take take up arms against the Soviets
They wanted to end the occupation and bring down the brutal communist government
By 1988 the war started to turn in the mujahideens Favour due in large parts to the arms and training provided by the us and its allies
The Soviet forces began their withdrawal in may that year
The withdrawal was completed in the year 1989
Shortly after the Soviet withdrawal the us abandoned Afghanistan and left the men who would become war lords to their own device
The final communist president of Afghanistan Najibullah Ahmadzai tried to make peace with the Mujahideen but failed
He warned the people that without the peace and Afghan-led consensus , Afghanistan would become a pawn in global power games
In a letter to a Mujahideen leader , Ahmadzai predicted a good grim future for the country
But by then it was too late , his reputation had been damaged by his time as the head of the communist intelligence
He was accused of overseeing torture and abuse
The war lord commanders launched 100s of 1000s of rockets and divided the city along geographic and ethnic lines
The forces under the control of these war lord commanders were accused of land grabbing and brutal crimes , rape , torture , massacres
In 1996 , the Taliban arrived in Kabul to liberate the people from the war lords , the same war lords who had been funded by the us
They hanged Najibullah and his brothers in Kabul Square
During the 5 year rule of the oppressive taliban regime the west continued to largely ignore Afghanistan
Until Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda carried out the 9/11 attacks in 2001 and George W Bush invaded Afghanistan
To destroy Al Qaeda , the us and its allies enlisted the help of the very warlords who wrought havoc over Kabul during the civil war
The US made their move and within months , the Taliban fell
The US and its alliance then turned to nation building with big promises of lessons learnt
The us announced an end to major combat operations in Afghanistan in 2003
A constitution was written , elections followed , a new president , a new legislature with women taking positions of power .
But as the years past , cracks , cracks in the coalition
And as the Taliban fought back and civilian casualties mounted , along with that of the armed forces , opinion turned , a new u.s President who happens to be Barack Obama had to make a decision , “ Go bigger or go home “
President Obama decided to send an additional 17,000 troops , then 30 ,000 more
By 2010 around 100,000 us troops would be in Afghanistan
In may of 2011 , Osama Bin Laden was found and killed in Pakistan , but the war continued
Obama promised to bring most us troops back to the us by the end of 2016
But then came in a new president , Donald Trump who made a deal with the Taliban that if they promised to keep out terrorist groups and not attack us troops , a full withdrawal would happen by may of 2021
But then another president was sworn in , President Joe Biden decided to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan
He said the Taliban would not immediately take over .
Well ,he was wrong
On August 15 2021 , the Taliban captured the Afghan capital Kabul and declared the war in Afghanistan over. The lightning speed with which the group made major territorial gains as the Afghan National Defence Security Forces (ANDSF) retreated without putting up a fight shocked many.
Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani fled the Country claiming he wanted to avoid blood shed
The Talibans after taking over have promised not to harm civilians and also to pledge to allow women in occupations .
As a result of pressure on flight services some have lost their lives trying to flee the country via us military planes
Now growing questions of what will happen to the women and girls of Afghanistan
This is how the Afghanistan war started and how is going
