What Separates a Recruitable Hitter from a “Good Travel Ball Player”?

Parents and players — this is a BIG one.
A lot of kids look great in travel ball. But not all of them are recruitable.
So what’s the difference?
⚾ It comes down to two things:
1. Talent
2. Performance (against real competition)
And you need BOTH.
📊 Performance Matters… But Context Matters More
Putting up numbers is great.
But college coaches are asking:
• Who were you facing?
• How hard were they throwing?
• What level was the competition?
• Were you dominating elite arms — or beating up on weak pitching?
Hitting 4 home runs in a weekend sounds impressive…
But if the pitcher is throwing 70 mphAnd two are inside-the-park homers
It doesn’t carry the same weight.
The gap between the ceiling and the floor in travel baseball is HUGE right now. There are so many teams, tournaments, and talent pools that it’s incredibly hard to compare players nationally — even regionally.
💡 Talent vs. “Gamer”
You don’t want to be:
❌ The super talented kid who never performs
OR
❌ The kid labeled “just a gamer” with no real tools
(And yes — being called “just a gamer” can actually limit how scouts see you.)
The recruitable hitter is:
✔ Talented
✔ Skilled
✔ Able to perform in games
✔ Doing it against high-level competition
That middle ground is where recruiting lives.
🧠 Here’s What Northeast Players & Parents Need to Hear
In the South? They play games year-round.
In the Northeast?We train year-round.
We live in the weight room and batting cage — because we have to.
But here’s the mistake:
🚫 Hitting off a tee and taking flips for 4–5 months straight is NOT the answer.
You need:• Live at-bats• Real pitching• Game-speed reps• Competitive environments
That’s how you bridge the gap.
🎓 Bottom Line for Parents
Recruitable isn’t about:
• Playing on the flashiest team
• Posting the biggest weekend stats
• Attending the most tournaments
It’s about:
📈 Developing tools
⚔ Competing against real arms
🎯 Performing when it counts
Build hitters who can BOTH show talent and perform in the game.
That’s what college coaches are actually looking for.
