Have you ever thought about the impact that volume and dynamics can have on the delivery of your sound?

Now, if you know me, you know I love to get loud!! It’s how I express my passionate love, as well as my sound of warfare and victory. I believe everyone should be able to let go and sing from the top of their lungs at some point ;-)

If you sing the whole song in a constant state of Loud, all the words start to sound the same, and instead of being drawn in, you can find yourself longing for variety (as well as your body be in a state of stress. Sound impacts your physical being!)

I’m not sharing this to judge him or shame anybody.

Our vocal choices can either support the song and expression — or distract and pull away from the purpose.
 
In a corporate worship setting, I believe it’s important to flow with different dynamics.
This is equally true for you as an indie artist, as you lead the audience into a story.
 
The way you sing matters.
 
This has to do with something called Psychoacoustics — the way sound affects our mental and emotional state. It tells the story.
(In the close future I will share more about the science & scripture of sound, as this explains a lot!)
 
Your sound (loud, soft, gentle, sharp) determines how people perceive your message. Even if your heart and motives are the same, your delivery speaks louder than the words themselves.
 
Think about a lullaby, or the way you read your kids a story at night. The words don’t change — but your tone is what calms them down, or puts them to sleep.
 
Or think about the police and their “verbal judo.” It’s not just what they say, but how they say it — with authority. And people know they mean it.
 
As Ecclesiastes 3:3 says, there is a time for everything.

In singing, that means there’s a time to sound gentle, soft, joyful, powerful, authoritative, or even brokenhearted.

Your voice is a powerful tool to create meaning in a word — a word that can be used multiple ways and say different things.

And so, here are my tips for you:
✅ In your setlist/song Preparation time, practice the dynamics of the songs by using different volumes and playing with different registers.
✅ Create space to get really skilled in your thick chest, soft chest, chest mix, head mix, clear head voice, and falsetto (breathy).
 
This will make you ready and prepared whenever God is prompting you to sing something a certain way.
