Mary Mattingly interviews artist Bahar Behbahani about her research-based artistic projects that explore underground water systems and water engineering in Persian gardens, including "all water has a perfect memory" created at Wave Hill, Bronx NY.
A reference to the Mississippi River, all water has a perfect memory comes from a phrase in Toni Morrison’s essay The Site of Memory: “All water has a perfect memory and it is forever trying to get back to where it was.” The focal point of the installation is an octagonal pool mounted on plastic barrels, suggesting a floating raft to be used in the event of an emergency move to the river. www.baharbehbahani.com
This interview is a part of A Year of Public Water, a campaign that highlights the history of New York City’s water supply system and examines ongoing issues of water quality, access, privatization and infrastructure facing the NYC drinking watershed–which provides more than a billion gallons of clean water daily to nine million state residents. The project is organized by artist Mary Mattingly in collaboration with More Art, a non-profit organization that commissions socially engaged public art projects. The campaign will take form digitally on www.public-water.com and in connection with various social media outposts.
