Fatty liver disease affects one in three Australian adults and is projected to impact one in two people within 15 years. A $15.5 million, seven-year research program has been launched at the Westmead Institute of Medical Research to develop blood tests for early detection, understand the disease at a molecular level, and create effective medical treatments. The disease, which often shows no symptoms until 80-90% of the liver is damaged, can lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, liver failure and increased risk of heart and kidney disease.
