It always feels a bit surreal that these beautiful ruins sit right in the middle of Edinburgh.
This is Holyrood Abbey, standing quietly beside Palace of Holyroodhouse, at the end of the Royal Mile.
It’s my favourite place when I visit the palace. Somehow it feels more real, more human.
Maybe it’s because I’ve always felt that way about ruins... there’s an honesty to them. They’ve been left as they are, without embellishment or restoration. Just time, and nature slowly taking over.
And if you’re visiting Holyrood Palace, don’t forget: your ticket includes access to the abbey too.
Most people visit the palace, but don’t even notice the abbey beside it.
