Big Waves and Heavy Weather Sailing! Aboard Alan Buchanan Classic Yacht Vashti across the North Sea

Due to current lockdown restrictions we've not been able to get down to the boatyard to work on Andromeda this week. As such, I've shared a video filmed in 2016 where I was crewing on the classic sailing yacht "Vashti", sailing from Harwich Harbour to Hellevoetsluis in The Netherlands. We set sail in the evening and sailed through the night, all day the following day and made it into a pub in The Netherlands before closing time.

Vashti is an Alan Buchanan designed yacht built out of teak in Essex and is the prototype to the "Vashti Class". She is 37ft on deck and sets a masthead sloop rig.

You'll see in the video that just an oversized Genoa comfortably drives us on at around 6 knots boat speed with a Force 6 across the beam. The strong winds had been up to Force 8 for a few days, building up a big sea state in the North Sea. Once this dropped off to a Force 6 we decided to leave but the shaken up lumpy North Sea remained rough with 3 metre waves. The camera really doesn't do the sea state justice but Vashti handled this extremely well.
