This is my DIY project to lay tiles in my kitchen. I am using a tile backer board called "No More Ply" which is a cement based board. A 6mm board apparently has the same equivalent thickness as a 12mm sheet of Plywood, which means you can get the same strength as you can with Ply with more ease and less height than you would with laying ply.
