Roman Pepper Pots (Piperatoria)
1. Empress Pepper Pot (Hoxne Hoard)
Late Roman silver piperatorium showing a richly dressed Imperial woman with a 4th-century hairstyle. Parcel-gilded hair, jewelry, and facial details. The rectangular base has a rotating disc for closing, filling, or sprinkling pepper. Likely a generic Imperial image rather than a specific empress.
2. Sleeping African Slave (Chaourse, 200–270 AD)
Silver pepper pot shaped as a squatting, sleeping African slave with a chained chest or lantern. Pepper was dispensed through holes in the head.
3. Hercules and Antaeus (Hoxne Hoard)
Parcel-gilded silver pepper pot depicting Hercules wrestling the giant Antaeus, with Ge emerging from the ground. The hollow pedestal contains the pepper mechanism with rotating base and perforations.
4. Blue-Eyed Capricorn (Hoxne Hoard)
Gilded silver pepper pot in the form of a reclining capricorn, made from thin silver sheet. One dark blue glass eye survives. Originally featured heart-shaped dispensing holes.
5. Hare Attacked by a Hound (Hoxne Hoard)
Small silver piperatorium showing a hound seizing a hare by the ear. Parcel gilding, glass eyes, and vegetal ground details. Likely part of a matching zoomorphic set with the capricorn.
