In this project, I replace an old front fence that had begun to fail due to rotting posts and ground movement. Rather than rebuilding the same thing again, this was an opportunity to address the underlying problems and create a cleaner, more considered design.
The goal with a front fence like this isn’t privacy. It’s definition without dominance. A fence that clearly marks the boundary while still allowing the house and garden to be seen and appreciated.
I walk through the full process, including removing the old fence, setting new posts, cutting and fitting the rails, preparing and painting the timber, and installing the vertical battens. Along the way, I explain key construction details, material choices, and small design decisions that help improve durability, alignment, and overall finish.
This is a practical how-to, but also an example of how simple proportions and restrained detailing can complement both the architecture and the garden, improving the street presence without overpowering the space.
