Tischfernsprecher W28 was the designation given to this type of table telephone by the Reichspost as it was first used by the German Post Office in 1928. Initially made by Siemens from 1925 its adoption by the State required it to be produced by several manufacturers. The handset and the upper part of the body are cast in Bakelite, the lower part containing the bell is sheet steel.
The nickel-plated dial indicates that this set was made during the 1930s; it also has and earth signalling button for PAX use. The set shown here is a two-line variant. The internal bell is wired to one line only, which is also the line connected when the handset is lifted. The handset is switched from the first to the second line using the toggle switch at the front of the set. Calls can be made or received on either line.
Thus by lifting the handset, switching to the second line and dialling the number of the first, this telephone can literally be made to 'ring off the hook'.
