What’s now a 13-acre island serving as a leash-free dog park, and nature area with .5 mile trail
Is actually the last remains of the Original Austin Dam
From 1890-1893 The Great Granite Dam was constructed 60 ft tall and 1,200 ft long built of Texas Red Granite. One of the Largest Dams in the World of its time.
Which Created Lake McDonald (named after Mayor John McDonald), or what we refer to modern day Lake Austin.
This Dam was directly tied to the creation of Austin Energy in 1895. To give ownership to the public/city, and away from privately owned companies.
On April 7, 1900. A massive overnight storm sent water raging 11 feet over the crest. With an eyewitness saying it looked like Niagra Falls. It destroyed the dam, around 100 homes, and killed at least 50 people
From 1909-1912 the dam was attempted to rebuild, but was halted after contractor disputes
In 1915 there was another flood that wiped out the rebuild. And creates even more havoc around the city, killing 60 people, destroying 1,000 buildings
Followed by another flood in 1935, which was considered one of the worst in the city’s history.
1938-1940 Congressman Lyndon B Johnson was able to push federal funding of $2.3 Million to build Tom Miller Dam. Which Stands 100.5 ft tall, 1,590 ft long.
Providing a sanctuary for cypress and redbud trees to grow roots in between the granite rubble. Which created the island, Red Bud Isle
