Like most Fuzhou styles Hu Xing Quan is based on San Zhan. This Yin Yang San Zhan is a longer set than the regular Hu Zun San Zhen.
Hu Xing Quan is a later offshoot of Hu Zun Quan. The Hu Xing system was founded by Zhou Zihe of Nanyu Town, Minhou County in Fuzhou prefecture.
Zhou studied Hu Zun Quan tiger boxing under Zheng Bugong of Yongtai county in Zheng's school in a boathouse on the docks of Fuzhou city's Taijiang district.
Later Zhou studied other systems under various other teachers and became well known for his martial skills as well as his painting and calligraphy.
However he remained best known for his Tiger Boxing which his martial descendants refer to as Hu Xing Quan to differentiate from Yongtai lines of Hu Zun tiger boxing.
HuZun Quan is a traditional style of Tiger boxing from Yongtai county in Fuzhou prefecture of Fujian Province. This style is considered to be one of the oldest of the southern styles of Tiger Boxing and can be traced back to the 1700's.
During the mid 1700's a man by the name of Li Yuanzhu studied martial arts with the monks at Yongtai's XiaoLian temple. Taking inspiration from the fierce tigers who roamed the mountains of Fujian he adapted the local methods of Jishan Quan (Jishan's Boxing / Integrated Mountain Boxing) to the shape and skills of the Tiger creating a new style of Boxing which he named Hu Zun Quan (Tiger Admiration Boxing / Respecting Tiger Boxing).
It is also often credited as the origin of Uechi Ryu Karate. Uechi Kanbun, The founder of that system is said to have learned martial arts in Fuzhou from a master called "Shushabu". People have claimed that this is the Hu Xing Quan master Zhou Zihe.
However none of the forms which are practiced in the Hu Xing style have been found to be a reasonable match for any Uechi Ryu form. Master Zhou ZiHe also supposedly practiced several other styles. However so far no one has been able to find any form which traces back to him that is a match for any Uechi Ryu form.
