As part of ITV News' NHS Under Pressure series, our reporter spent a day with paramedics in Birmingham.
West Midlands Ambulance Service handled 150 emergency calls every hour on average last weekend - numbers more commonly seen on a busy New Year's Eve.
Ambulances services across the country saw a similar surge in demand last weekend:
West Midlands took 3,550 emergency calls up nearly 17% on the same period last year.
North West Ambulance Service took 3,973 calls - up 16%
East of England Ambulance Service took 3,278 - up 16%
