What Exactly Are Colon Polyps?
Colon polyps are abnormal growths that form when the inner lining of the colon starts multiplying faster than usual. These cells bunch up and create a small bump or mushroom-like structure. Most of them are harmless and don’t spread like cancerous cells do.

Where Can Polyps Develop in the Colon?
Polyps can appear anywhere in the colon—from the right side and transverse colon to the left side, sigmoid, or rectum. Most small polyps don’t show symptoms and are only discovered during a colonoscopy done for another reason.

Can Colon Polyps Cause Symptoms?
Larger polyps (usually over 2–3 cm) may lead to bleeding, black or bloody stools, or anemia. If located in the rectum or sigmoid, they might change bowel habits or cause mucus discharge. But these cases are rare.

Are All Colon Polyps Cancerous?
No. Most colon polyps do not turn into cancer. Only a small fraction has the potential to become cancerous over time. Identifying their type and size helps determine the risk.

How Are Polyps Diagnosed and Evaluated?
Polyps are usually found through colonoscopy. Using advanced imaging techniques like narrow band imaging and magnification, specialists assess size, shape, and location to decide whether removal is necessary.

When Should a Polyp Be Removed?
Polyps larger than 5–7 mm are often removed and sent for pathology. This helps identify early-stage cancer, if any, or assess future risk. The treatment plan depends on this detailed analysis.

Do Genetics Play a Role in Polyps?
Yes. Multiple or recurring polyps may indicate a hereditary condition. In such cases, genetic testing and counseling are often recommended to plan long-term treatment and screening.
