L-group chondrites (Low iron chondrites) are one of the three main groups of ordinary chondrites. The main components of L-group chondrites include:
Olivine (Fayalite ~25-32%): A common mineral, with a higher Fe content than H-group chondrites.
Orthopyroxene (Enstatite): High Mg/Fe ratio, an important silicate mineral.
Plagioclase: Present but in low proportions.
Iron-nickel metal (Fe-Ni): Accounts for about 4-10% of the total mass.
Troilite (FeS): An important iron sulfide compound in this group.
Density
The average density of L-group chondrites ranges from 3.3 to 3.6 g/cm³, depending on the proportions of metal, sulfide, and silicate minerals.
Free iron content
The free iron content of L-group chondrites is about 4-10% of the total mass. Compared to H-group chondrites (high iron), L-group chondrites have a lower free iron content but still more than LL-group chondrites (low iron, low metal).
L-group chondrites have a relatively low Fe-Ni metal content, are rich in olivine and pyroxene, have an average density, and have a moderate amount of free iron. This makes the L-group an important part of the study of the origin and evolution of the Solar System.
