Hi everyone. Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at this Reese Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier, and we're gonna see how it fits on the back of our 2017 Winnebago View Motor Home. Now a cargo carrier is a great way to carry just extra stuff with you. And on the View, obviously it's a motor home, it's got storage compartments, but it's a smaller motor home. And while it does have compartments, they're limited and they're gonna be pretty small for what they are.
And you might find yourself with some larger, bulkier items, say a generator, maybe even just a large cooler that you don't wanna bring inside the motor home with you and you can't fit in the storage compartment. At that point, a hitch-mounted carrier like this becomes the easiest way to store those because it's still easy to reach and these have a great weight capacity. This option from Reese can support up to 500 pounds, although I'll say with that, when you are loading it down, if you plan on pushing that weight capacity, just be very careful with how you distribute that weight. You wouldn't want to take a really heavy generator, load it on one side and not have equal weight on the other. So if you've got something really heavy like that, try to just concentrate it to the center so it's even.
And this Reese carrier is one of the biggest you can get for the hitch. So if space is a concern, I'd go with this. Your interior dimensions of usable space, front to back, is gonna be 24 inches. And from side to side, you're gonna be working with 60 inches. Not to mention you're gonna have some pretty tall sidewalls sitting at about five and a half inches tall.
So plenty of room to fit those larger items and help keep 'em boxed in with the side rails, which also serve as excellent tie down points. Now the cargo compartment that is on the back of your View will be completely unobstructed. It's really close when you open it to that side rail, but it does fully open so you can reach in and grab stuff and not have to hold the door or worry about it hitting the carrier. And then as long as you don't get too crazy with how tall you stack your stuff, your rear slide will be just fine too. But again, I just wouldn't stack things that tall to begin with.
Now some measurements to keep in mind, from the bumper of our View to the end of the carrier, we are gonna be adding 34 and a half inches of length. And because it's a completely fixed carrier, you're gonna be stuck with that all the time as long as the cargo carrier is in the hitch. Now for your ground clearance at the bottom, you do get a slight rise out of the shank, which gives us 25 and a half inches of ground clearance. More than enough that you won't have to worry about bottoming out, but it will be enough to, again, if you're loading something like a generator, have to give it a little bit of lift to get it over that short sidewall. Now this will work with our two inch by two inch receiver tube. And it's important to note that it does not come included with a hitch pin and clip, so you will need to pick up one on your own. And when picking up that hitch pin and clip, I'd strongly recommend an anti-rattle pin, especially being on the back of a motor home, you're gonna have more shock and vibration back here than a typical passenger vehicle, so something to keep the carrier a bit more solid would be really nice. And the Reese carrier does have a hollow shank, so an anti-rattle bolt that has a block sliding inside the shank would work out really well there. You can even pick up one that is locking, so you add a layer of security to the carrier too. But when it comes down to it, the Reese carrier here is pretty basic, not really coming with much and being a fixed carrier, you're not gonna get a lot of options there. So the big concern for a lot of people just comes down to the weight, really. It is a steel carrier and it's quite large, so moving this around and getting it in and out of the hitch, it's gonna be pretty cumbersome. If that's not something you're super comfortable with or you just don't wanna deal with, I'd strongly recommend looking into an aluminum cargo carrier. There's a number of different ones available on our site from Flint Hill Goods, and they even make one that's a
