“Gaura Pahu Nā Bhajiyā Mainu” is a devotional song (kīrtana) composed by Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura, a prominent Vaiṣṇava saint.
The song expresses deep spiritual regret for not worshiping Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu (also known as Gaura or Gaurāṅga). It is included in his work Prārthanā (“Prayers”) and is widely sung in Vaiṣṇava communities.
This kīrtana conveys the author’s lamentation for neglecting devotion to Lord Caitanya and thereby losing the priceless treasure of divine love (prema-ratna-dhana). The line “gaura pahu nā bhajiyā mainu” means, “By not worshiping Lord Gaura, I have invited my own spiritual ruin.
”Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura describes how he rejected spiritual wealth, became absorbed in material sense gratification—likened to poison (viṣaya-viṣama-viṣa)—and failed to immerse himself in the saṅkīrtana movement of chanting and kīrtana inaugurated by Lord Caitanya.
The song consists of five to six Bengali verses, each expressing a different aspect of spiritual regret:
Verse 1: Lamenting the loss of the treasure of divine love
Verse 2: Rejecting spiritual wealth and drowning in sinful activities
Verse 3: Abandoning saintly association for material enjoyment
Verse 4: Drinking the poison of materialism instead of relishing Gaura-kīrtana
Verse 5: Questioning the value of continuing life without spiritual attainment.
This kīrtana is traditionally sung during Gaura Pūrṇimā (the appearance day of Lord Caitanya) and other Vaiṣṇava festivals
